Target Removes Some LGBTQ+ Merch Ahead of Pride Month After Workers Receive Threats

Target is removing certain items from its stores and making other changes to its LGBTQ+ merchandise nationwide ahead of Pride month, after an intense backlash from some customers including violent confrontations with its workers.

Target has removed some of its LGBTQ+ products from its shelves and online store in response to backlash, which includes threats to Target employees.

“Since introducing this year’s collection, we’ve experienced threats impacting our team members’ sense of safety and well-being while at work,” the retailer said in a statement. ”Given these volatile circumstances, we are making adjustments to our plans, including removing items that have been at the center of the most significant confrontational behavior.”

Pride Month kicks off next week and Target has been promoting Pride-related products since May. The Pride Collection includes more than 2,000 products from children’s books and clothing to calendars and housewares. Target did not say which products would be removed from its inventory.

“Our focus now is on moving forward with our continuing commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community and standing with them as we celebrate Pride Month and throughout the year,” the statement continued.

Transgender issues have been a hot political topic in the US in recent months, with gender-affirming healthcare and trans athletes at the center of the political divide. Target, who like many brands has been a supporter of LGTBQ+ rights, has been subject to conservative criticism online.

Target’s response comes after Bud Light’s recent controversy in which the brand backtracked on a partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, leading to a massive drop in sales.
