Keynote: The 2020 Effect: The Revolution Will Go Viral

In this year of cultural reckoning,

If the effects of COVID-19 turned consumers towards their screens to encounter the inequalities

2020 has undoubtedly been a year of reckoning. If the effects of COVID-19 made Americans acutely aware of the underlying inequalities that shape our country’s physical and economic health, the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and the ensuing protests, have laid bare the ways in which systemic racism structures our national culture. This presentation uses Power in Progress—our 2019 study on Gen Z’s relationship to power—to understand the shifts in personal, cultural, and structural politics that have reignited the Black Lives Matter movement and mobilized global calls  for accountability, equity, and justice. As major levers of cultural power, brands are increasingly involved as changemakers; following the Power in Progress frameworks, brands can learn how to tap into their power and align their actions with their values, helping young people make waves in the pursuit of structural change.

The Revolution Will Go Viral is part of The 2020 Effect — a monthly series from the Creative Strategy & Cultural Intelligence team at Velocity, ViacomCBS. This series of mini-studies tracks signals, emerging behaviors, and potential long-term effects on culture and consumer behavior due to the drastic upheaval of the year 2020.

Antoinette Clarke and Tricia Clarke-Stone are first generation Americans who grew up in Brooklyn, NY. They’ll discuss how their experiences inspired them to write their book, “Double Down: Bet On Yourself and Succeed On Your Terms” in an effort to democratize success for people who look like them so no one is left behind. They’ve learned that to win when the deck is stacked against you, you need to ditch the old Status Quo rules and be intentional about what you want.  In conversation moderated by Denya ChinQuee, the identical twin authors who have climbed their way up the ranks in the media world will share their principles on how to identify your biggest competitive advantage  and  double down on it. And also explain how their entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial journeys have taught them to adapt and innovate under pressure-even during times of continuous change and uncertainty, while being a part of what they call “the New American mainstream”.
