The Internet and the evolution of electronic media has fundamentally and forever changed the publishing industry. At the same time, new platforms, formats and devices, including smart phones, tablets, and connected TV, have radically changed consumer behavior and how and when we consume media and entertainment. And, brands are scrambling to keep up with the digital transformation of the marketing and media industries. Brand Innovators Future of Publishing & Monetization will look at how publishers are adapting and re-inventing themselves in the digital era, and using technology to monetize their content, across all screens. From native advertising and video, to programmatic and addressable advertising, we will look at the hottest trends in publishing. We will also examine how brands are capitalizing on the digital media revolution to reach their consumers more efficiently and effectively than ever, as well as measure their success online overall with sophisticated attribution models.

Keynote: Building a Sustainable Digital Content Business

The media business is in turmoil. Magazine brands are toppling like toy soldiers. Newspaper advertising continues its double digit downward march. Cord cutting is taking a bite out of Cable. Even digital-only publishers are feeling the pinch, as the so-called “duopoly” gobbles up the lion’s share of spending, while fraud and viewability issues erode trust in the ecosystem. Yet the number of hours people spend consuming media is at an all-time high. There is arguably more and better news, entertainment and lifestyle content than ever before. And when consumers pay attention, there is money to be made. The models are changing — subscriptions are on the rise; branded content is becoming a meaningful contributor to the top line; Linear TV and digital video are merging in unforeseen ways; and all media are becoming more targeted and measurable. New cross-platform monetization opportunities arise almost daily for those organization agile enough to seize the moment, as digital continues to weave its way into the physical world. So what is the future of publishing and monetization? It’s….complicated!

Keynote — Restoring Trust in the Digital Ecosystem

We’ve reached the nadir of trust in digital advertising. The terrible trio of fraud, viewability and data leakage are to blame. Lack of transparency doesn’t help either. Proctor & Gamble CMO Marc Pritchard stated bluntly he will no longer give digital media a pass, and that P&G would stop wasting money on a “crappy digital media supply chain.” For the sake brand safety, Chase CMO Kristin Lemkau radically reduced the number of sites her ads ran on, even though it meant higher CPMs. And consumers are blocking ads like never before. Under the crush of these challenges, the Industry has finally woken up and is focused on solutions. The EU’s imminent enactment of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has created a deadline and now companies are moving with an urgency like never before to give consumers control of their data, become as transparent as possible and to, thereby, restore trust in the digital ecosystem.
