Power in Progress

Power in Progress is a global study on youth and power. The Velocity Creative Strategy & Cultural Intelligence team has been tracking youth expression of power and activism since 2018 and this year we’ve seen the themes of this study move from nascent signals to solidified dynamics. Young people are forming their identity, coalescing with the collective, and contending with systemic forces in unprecedented ways in the wake of this year's weighty events. This report highlights how Gen Z is negotiating their power at personal, cultural and structural levels; how the memeification of protest and new tools for self-education have changed where and how power is asserted; and how brands can meaningfully participate in structural change.

Hawa Arsala, Director Creative Strategy & Cultural Intelligence, ViacomCBS
