Jeff Charney

Chief Marketing Officer

A little bit about me

Jeff Charney joined Progressive as its Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) in 2010. He leads the strategic, integrated marketing efforts for the $40+ billion company. His responsibilities include marketing strategy, national advertising, digital and social media content initiatives, internal and external communications, retention marketing, and consumer/broad-market insights and research. In addition to driving the company’s external advertising, marketing, and PR agency roster, he also directs the creative efforts of the company’s award-winning in-house creative agency—Ninety6—and provides marketing communications support to the company’s 35,000 agents. Charney is no stranger to developing one-of-a-kind icons. In addition to Progressive’s “Flo,” and a range of other “network” characters that he and his team created, he was in charge of the “duck” as senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Aflac. He previously held posts as a chief marketing officer at the multi-media retailer QVC, and real estate aggregator Homestore.com (now Move.com and parent of Realtor.com), and was the chief creative officer at Fringe Ventures, LLC—an experiential-based digital marketing and consulting company he founded. For years, his pioneering reputation in disruptive marketing and breakthrough creativity has distinguished him among other marketers. Charney has been at the helm of five corporate identity/brand overhauls; won “Marketer of The Year: Brand Genius” from Adweek; named one of the most creative people in business by both Fast Company and Advertising Age; won the American Advertising Federation’s Brand Impact Award; named to PR News’ list of Top 40 Top Brand Innovators; and won “Marketer of the Year” at the Radio Mercury Awards. His work has won at the Cannes—multiple times—and Sundance film festivals and received White House recognition. Overall, he and his teams have garnered more than 100 national awards. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Investors Exchange (IEX), the disruptive U.S. equities exchange that’s setting a new market standard by raising the bar for performance, fairness, and transparency. Charney holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from the University of South Carolina (summa cum laude) and a Master of Arts degree in journalism (highest honors) from The Ohio State University.
